SAPSOC PROJECT

Supporting Agropastoralism to Reinforce Social Cohesion in the Cross-border territories Ghana - Burkina Faso

Programme Objective

The project will support the stability of the wider region through the monitoring of the pastoral sector and provision of intervention funds to facilitate local responses to tensions and crises along border communities.

Results

There are five main outputs in the project:

  • Output 1 will address the prolific misconceptions around livestock herders and the Fulani community, to reinforce social cohesion and prepare northern communities for the arrival of refugee herder communities (training module around livestock herding used to conduct informed debates between communities + distribution of ID cards to transhumant herders to reduce fear among local populations and facilitate movement for herders).

  • Output 2 will formalize the timely collection of information and data to feed an early warning system specifically targeting the pastoral sector.

  • Output 3 will support the analysis and dissemination of this information to key stakeholders to facilitate decision making processes.

  • Output 4 will provide the funds to act should the EWS (Output 2 and 3) trigger an alert. The funds are controlled and all decisions regarding their use are made in consultation with the Technical Steering Committee (CSO, local authority, State services). Women and vulnerable communities will be particularly targeted in the use of these funds.

  • Output 5 will reduce competition around resources and improve the standard of living of populations vulnerable to the effects of armed insecurity through better access to water resources.
